Care of Silver All silver should be kept clean and free of dust and dirt. You do not need to remove the tarnish before storing an object. Tarnishing can be minimized by storing jewelry in polyethylene bags then sealing the bags (Ziploc). If you wrap the silver piece first use acid-free quality paper. Storing silver in newspapers and or using rubber bands is very detrimental to the jewelry/silver. This can cause deep discoloration that may require professional polished. Do not store silver in plastic wrap. Plastic wraps contain materials that contain tarnishing gases. To prevent scratches, we recommend you store your jewelry so that it isn't rubbing against other articles, like in a loose drawer or jewelry box. Avoid storing your sterling silver jewelry directly on wood surfaces, because wood usually contains acids that mar the finish. Tarnish strips are used to absorb the tarnishing gases. They contain activated charcoal and guard against corrosion, tarnish and discoloration, not by emitting fumes or vapors, but by absorbing the airborne pollutants that cause the problem. Because it removes harmful chemicals from the air, rather than giving off gases of its own, objects containing silver, copper, brass, solder, gold and tin are given excellent oxidation protection. Protection time depends on the nature and permeability of the storage container and on the pollution level of the surrounding atmosphere. Usually one one strip will last 6 months in a loosely sealed container. Frequently asked questions: 1. What are Anti-Tarnish strips? They're special absorbent paper that protect metals from unsightly discoloration and tarnish. They can be used with sterling silver, copper, silverplate, tin, brass, gold, pewter, lead, bronze and other materials. 2. How do they work? They absorb sulfides and other pollutants in the air and prevent tarnish from occurring. They do not remove existing tarnish. 3. How do I use them? Simply put the strips in a well-sealed enclosure with tarnish free metal items. The more airtight the longer the strips will last. The enclosure can be a jewelry box, cabinet, safe-deposit box, etc. 4. How many strips should I use? One strip protects approximately 1 cubic foot. 5. Does the tarnish strip need to touch the metal? No, just laying near it will be sufficient. 6. How long will the strips last? Approximately 6 months depending on the amount of pollution and humidity in the air. If any discoloration occurs, clean the jewelry/silver and replace the strips. 7. Are the strips safe? Yes, they are non-toxic and safe when used as directed. 8. What causes black spots/streaks to appear on my silver? If you are storing with a treated fabric that retards tarnish, the cloth may have lost its effectiveness or may be re-depositing captured tarnish back into the silver. If it's happening to silver plated items, the plating may have worn too thin and the base metals are exposed. 9. How long will the unopened packages of strips remain effective? Two years or longer, if the outer plastic wrap remains intact. 10. What types of metal items to they protect? Many people use the strips to maintain the attractive appearance and high value of jewelry, fishing tackle, hollowware, flatware, cookware, tools, ornaments, coins, photos, firearms, trophies, awards, musical instruments, tea services, and other collectibles.
